The boat serves as an ambulance for emergency care, a taxi for staff, referred patients, visiting health officials and Mallam. It’s used to bring vaccines and medical provisions and provides a weekly community ‘bus’ service to the markets. It provides crucial access to Fadugu until Nov-Dec when the road may be passable to 4WD.
A specialised mechanic from Freetown has already travelled to Yiben to dismantle the motor and assess the repairs needed. The cost includes parts, transport and workmanship, along with additional training in maintenance for the operators.
